Welcome to Eko Akete Houston Texas

Our ancestry is traced or derived from the Old Kingdom of EKO (Lagos). Our enviable historical pasts and references make it imperative for us to be concerned about Lagos. By establishing a charitable organization, we assist in uplifting our community by following the dreams and wishes of our ancestors. Dreams of a better Lagos, free of drugs and violence, progressive in thoughts and deeds, are ideals for a better society.

On March 27th, 2003, after several consultations, we formed what is now known as Eko Akete Houston Texas, a not-for-profit charitable organization registered in the United States of America, and our membership has since grown.

Seven years after registration and to the glory of God, we list our services to our community (both in the USA & NIGERIA) as part of our achievements which are stated below.

Developed, established, and promoted educational and filial ties among THE OMO EKOS in the state of Texas in recognizing exemplary conduct in our children and other children in the community by granting awards and donations.

Our Purpose

Our focus is EKO, an old kingdom in Yorubaland, southwest of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, founded over 600 years ago. The indigenes or those with ancestral linkages are referred to as "OMO EKO."

Our colonial past changed the name to Lagos, coined from the Portuguese term "Lago de Curano," an obvious reference to its natural endowment of being a place surrounded by water, an island.

The Kingdom of Lagos is in present-day Nigeria. It covers the Lagos Central Senatorial District (encompassing present-day local governments of Lagos Island, Eti-Osa, Apapa, parts of Lagos Mainland, and Surulere) of Lagos State, Nigeria. It also has the added advantage of being the economic nerve center of the Federal Republic of Nigeria with its strategic ports of Apapa, Tin Can Island, and Roro, to mention a few.

The economic boom of the early 1970s in Nigeria and the strategic position of the Kingdom over the years encouraged urban migration from the hinterland parts of Nigeria and West Africa. They brought along with them catastrophic urban development problems. Some of these include the seemingly increasing loss of identity among the indigenes, deteriorating or lack of family values, disasters, both natural and self-inflicted through acts of commission, omission, or sheer naivety, AIDS epidemic, and armed robbery resulting from a high rate of unemployment and drug abuse.
